LRC Overdues and Sanctions

All overdue penalties are suspended during the closure

Overdue sanctions are imposed by the LRC to ensure the fair and equitable sharing of limited resources amongst our clients.

When you have overdue items, you cannot borrow books, renew your items or place a hold.

LRC sanctions accrue for overdue items at the rate of 50 demerit points per day for books and 100 demerit points per day for DVDs.

Points do not accrue for weekends and public holidays.

When you have accrued more than 1000 or more in demerit points, your borrowing record is blocked as well as access to IT systems.

Once overdues reach 1000 demerit points, the items must be returned and only then will the demerit points be removed.

Sanctions can accrue up to 2000 per item, at which stage the item is deemed lost and you will be charged both: a processing fee of $12.00 and the cost of the item(s).

Overdue notices are e-mailed  to your myangliss.edu.au account:

  • You will receive a "Courtesy notice" e-mail 2 days before items you have on loan from the library will become overdue. The e-mail will advise you to contact the LRC and re-new your items to avoid overdue fees.
  • You will receive a "First notice" e-mail after the items you have on-loan become overdue.
  • You will receive a "Long time overdue" e-mail when the overdue fees have reached 1000 demerit points and more.

All notices include email, phone number and LRC URL to contact the Library if you have any questions to ask. Please check with library staff for total before payment. Upon return of late items your borrowing and student network privileges (this includes My WAI access) can be reinstated, and transcripts of results can be released.

Please note: We do not send our notices by post, due to William Angliss Institute's commitment to sustainability and the LRC's aim to reduce its own environmental impact.

Items returned in the afterhours return chute outside of the LRC will not be taken off your record until the next working day.

Lost or missing items

When you borrow material from the LRC you are responsible for its timely return.

If library material is lost or stolen whilst issued to you, you are liable for the replacement cost of the item(s) PLUS an administration fee of $12.00 PLUS any outstanding fines.

Please complete this form to advise the LRC about items on your record, which you are unable to return. It is in your best interests to advise LRC staff as soon as you become aware that your item(s) may be lost. For lost or stolen items, we may require you to supply supporting documentation, e.g. a copy of a police report, etc.

In some circumstances a replacement copy will be accepted. You will need to speak to the LRC Team Leader to discuss whether this is possible.

If there are genuine extenuating circumstances, let LRC staff know and they will try to help in any way possible.

About the Special Collections

Established in 2006, the LRC's Special Collections initially housed materials related to the subjects taught by the Institute. Over the past number of years, the collection has focused more on Australian culinary history and culture, building its strength in collecting materials such as books, newspapers journals, manuscripts, personal collections and artefacts. Our rare culinary collections offers all staff, students and visitors to the Institute the opportunity to explore and to connect with archival material. The collections offer unique research opportunities and cultural value to the community.

Our Collections Strengths

• Pre 1900 cookbooks, both Australian and English materials
• 1900-1960 Australian cookbooks
• Pre 1900 – 1940 community cookbooks and advertising materials
• Unique and rare ephemera, e.g. menus, personal recipe cards
• Vintage culinary artefacts
• Materials related to William Angliss Institute

The Research Room

The Special Collections Research Room located in the Learning Resource Centre near the Training Room, provides secure and easy access to the major collections. The room is open to our students, staff, and visitors from Monday to Friday 10 am - 3 pm by appointment. It offers a Mac, a scanner, and a reading area for researching. It also offers a wonderful nexus of the meeting of technology with content. Through numerous digitisation projects, the research room will expand its digital representation of materials.

Exhibitions and Gallery

There are two exhibition areas. One is located at the LRC's main entrance and the other is located in the Research Room. The Special Collections holds exhibitions four times a year. Each exhibition will have different themes and topics to give our students and staff an opportunity to experience some hidden treasures from our Special Collections. Occasionally, Special Collections holds exhibitions that are incorporated within Institute events.

The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy
By a Lady
London: Printed for the author, sold by A. Millar, & T. Trye, 1758

This cookbook was one of perhaps the most influential of all English 18th century cookbooks. It is still in print today and used as a reference for food research and historical reconstruction. This 1758 edition gave the first mention of “Hamburgh sausages” and piccalilli (Paco-Lilla).

The Lady's Assistant for Regulating and Supplying Her Table
By Mason Charlotte

London: Walter, 1801, 8th ed.

The Lady's Assistant" by Charlotte Mason is an important but much neglected eighteenth century cookery book. Unusually the table settings show layouts for more ordinary households as well as affluent ones, and the recipes follow this pattern. In an introduction the food historian Ivan Day discusses Charlotte Mason's innovative dishes in this most interesting work. In the first edition of 1773 the book's author was described as 'a professed housekeeper, who had upwards of thirty years’ experience of families of the first fashion'.

The English and Australian Cookery Book
by Edward Abbott
London, 1864, 1st edition

First and only edition published in 1864, written by Edward Abbott (1801-1869). One of only eight known Australian archival copies. Published pseudonymously by “an Australian Aristologist”, the book is a gastronomic miscellany of ‘the modern cookery of the mother country and the colonies’, and of Continental and Hebrew cookery.
Recipes include ‘Roast Beef of Old England’, ‘kangaroo steamer’ and ‘slippery bob’  a dish of battered kangaroo brains fried in emu fat.

The Antipodean Cookery Book
By Mrs. Lance Rawson

Melbourne, 1897, 2nd edition.

First edition published in 1895, this old cookery book has been reprinted in recent years, the latest facsimile edition was published in 1992. The author, Lance Rawson, told young housewives that cooking is an essential skill for a happy marriage, and encouraged them to learn about edible bush food from Aboriginal people in the bush area. In her book, it shows us the cooking fashion in Australian pioneers’ family in nineteenth century.
